Al's Armenian background was a strong influence on his life: his grandparents were born in Anatolia and Syria during the Ottoman Empire. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Carolyn Gardner and his children, Jonathan Scott Gardner (Marie), Jeffrey Lewis Rosner (Susan), Debbie Riga, Debbie Torrance (David), and 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild on the way.
